IBO

The IBO (International Biology Olympiad) brings together the most gifted biology talents around the world. (IBO) is the association that organizes the world's premier biology competition for secondary school students.

The IBO competition challenges and stimulates these students to expand their talents and to promote their future careers as scientists.
The syllabus is as follows:-
  • Cell Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology & Structure and function of cells: chemical components, organelles, cell metabolism, protein synthesis, transport through membranes, and mitosis and meiosis
  • Animal Anatomy & Physiology (emphasis on vertebrates), Structure and function of tissues and organs involved in: digestion and nutrition, circulation, reproduction and development, regulation (neural and hormonal), respiration, excretion, and immunity
  • Plant Anatomy & Physiology (emphasis on seed plants) Structure and function of tissues and organs involved in: photosynthesis, transpiration and gas exchange, transport of water, minerals and assimilates, growth and development, reproduction (ferns and mosses included)
  • Ethology, behavioural systems, conflict behavior, causes of behavior, and learned behavior
  •  Ecology, ecosystems, bio-geochemical cycles, population structure and dynamics, biosphere and man, food relationships, energy flow, and succession
The book Campbell biology is considered the bible to prepare for this olympiad.
Other books are :-
  • Human Physiology by Vanders
  • Plant Biology by Raven
  • Biochemistry by Harvey or Color atlas of biochemistry by Koolman
  • genetics by Brooker
  • Molecular biology of the cell by Alberts

This a pdf of Campbell Biology can be found on epdf website.
The site www.biolympiads.com is a good site for preparation guide. This is a good pdf on how to prepare for Biology olympiad :- http://web.mit.edu/~csvoss/Public/usabo/IBO-Guide.pdf
